Carina Peterson, Sea Treasures – part 1

This exhibition shows the process of preparing fibers from the stem of banana trees into ropes and threads. The fibers, hidden inside the juicy stem, need to be dried, divided, cleaned and softened in water before they can be spun or twisted into a strong thread. The fibers are thick, robust and strong – qualities that scar the skin of the working hands. The last banana boat left Frihamnen in Gothenburg in December 2000. In the 18th century, next to Gathenhielmska Huset, a ropewalk was built by Ingela Gathenhielm. The port’s historical scope are central in an artistic process where local rope-making history meets new and old material knowledge.
