Susanne Fagerlund – A compost pile of past, present & future, 2023

In this project, Susanne Fagerlund has explored archives with images of endangered & extinct species. Inspired by Donna Haraway’s theories about ‘Tentacular thinking’, the artist has approached the project as a mad gardener treating the archives as a compost pile of past, present & possible future. Using a kaleidoscope of algorithms & digital tools, Fagerlund has sequenced the images – melded & mutated them – into new species. A speculative digital ecosystem – where the past & future coexist in the perpetual tension of the present climate crisis. The work ‘Fruiting Bodies’ is inspired by fungi & their mycelium connecting plants to share resources in an ecosystem.
