Appropriation GIBCA, Bildlärarutbildningen HDK-Valand

Since 2014, art education students at HDK-Valand, in an advanced-level course, have been working with appropriation as a theme and tool. In the context of art, appropriation roughly entails stealing, copying, borrowing, quoting, sampling, mixing, remixing, and making it one’s own. Over the years, the students have used major contemporary exhibitions in Gothenburg as a starting point for their appropriations. When GIBCA opens every other year in Gothenburg, it is a natural choice to base their work on. In the brief exhibition presented at HDK, the students have woven together both artistic and pedagogical aspects in relation to the biennial’s theme in their appropriations and essays.
