GIBCA Attends Market Art Fair
How do artistic and curatorial practices address rising nationalism? How do contemporary artists relate to terms such as ‘home’, ‘belonging’ and ‘national identity’? The tensions that have followed the nationalist and populist waves in Europe have increased the importance of analysis and critical thinking, even in the art world.
Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA) 2017 approached these questions. Several of the artworks presented strong reflections on the changes that have taken place in Sweden over the recent decades. To continue the discussion, GIBCA invited three of these artists to participate in a conversation during Market Art Fair.
The talk, titled “Home Sweet Home” featured curator Corina Oprea, artists Jens Haaning and Santiago Mostyn and GIBCA’s Artistic Director, Ioana Leca, who together reflected over art’s role in contemporary society.
